Belvedere Yard

Further along mersey Road was the Belvedere Yard.  This was another long-lived yard and it came under th ownership of many people.  Longest established there were various generations of the Mason family (at one time in partnership with a Mr. Craggs), but the yard at one time belonged to Philip Speakman & Sons.

The remains of the patent slipway can be seen today and are just to the west of the former Old Quay Yard (today, The Deck residential complex).  Latterly, they were used by the Manchester Ship Canal Company to stow their lock gates on.

The picture above is of a postcard showing vessels, including the schooner REDTAIL, being worked on at the yard.  It appears in the late Bert Starkey's book, Schooner Port, and appears here on my website (and in my book, Shipyards of the Upper Mersey) care of Avid Publications.
